The information and communications technology (ICT) industry is a key driver of digitization throughout Europe. In Germany alone, the sector currently employs more than 1.2 million people and has sales of 260 billion euros. ICT service providers account for 63 percent and ICT hardware manufacturers for 37 percent of sales.
The ICT sector is one of the highly innovative industries that make an above-average contribution to overall economic growth. This is also reflected in the innovator rate, i.e. the proportion of companies that have introduced a new or noticeably improved product or process in the last three years. With an above-average 59%, the ICT sector ranks third in a sector comparison behind vehicle manufacturing and electrical engineering/mechanical engineering. As a cross-sectional technology, ICT also enables and initiates many product and process innovations in almost all other industries. Gross value added in the ICT sector currently amounts to 112 billion euros. This puts the ICT sector on a par with the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
